Beauséjour urban development plan

The esplanade of the Family Allowance Fund (Caisse des Allocations Familiales) building is integral to the public spaces of Beauséjour. Building public facilities at the heart of the neighbourhood is a key feature of the project’s social dimension, in tandem with the ecological issues in the town’s sustainable approach.

The esplanade comprises a series of stairways and terraces made of basalt, with planters of Corten steel. The materials used in the public space composition are a reminder of the geological history of Réunion Island, and its link to volcanic activity; basalt from the island’s quarries gives a strong identity to the mineral spaces of the neighbourhood. Showcasing local production sectors is also a means of minimising the financial and ecological cost of importing materials.

The gardens of the building create a flow to the east and to Fleur de Jade street, to compose a garden that integrates a rainwater retention system – and provides an attractive green foreground to the building.
